Parish Councillor Recruitment

Councillor Recruitment

Our local parish council aims to make a positive difference to how we live and enjoy what we have in our community.  Councillors can join the council at election time but more often we have the option to offer a seat around the table to people who want to make a difference.  We have vacancies now and would be delighted to talk to you about what the work involves and how you can have a real impact on where you live.   Even if you have only half a mind to do this or simply find out more, do get in touch!

We’d really like to welcome new people on to the council to represent the interests of everyone in the area.  We’d particularly like to have more women, younger people and anyone who feels that they don’t have a voice now.  But the main thing we are looking for is enthusiasm and a bit of time to help shape a good place to live.

  • A new settlement within our Parish – we are working with others to help shape a new community and accessible amenities alongside hundreds of new dwellings in the proposed redevelopment of the Sir John Moore Barracks site.
  • Reducing Carbon – Working towards reducing the carbon footprint of our community through information, practical advice and a community thermal imaging camera.
  • Playgrounds and Leisure – Managing much-used recreation and leisure facilities so that we can get the best for our residents, ensure the quality and safety of our grounds and playgrounds, and enhance the enjoyment of life outdoors.
  • Greenspaces – Promoting green public spaces to improve the range of plants and wildlife that will prevent further loss of species.
  • Walking and Cycling – Pressing for improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists, including links to the Sir John Moore site.
  • Our Community – Working with our colleagues in neighbouring parishes and with Winchester and Hampshire to ensure that any proposed developments have positive benefits for our community and environment.

The best way to find out what it’s like to be a parish councillor is to talk to someone who’s doing it now.  Come along to a parish council meeting to see the council in action, or speak to one of our councillors and find out what they think of the role.

Volunteering

We rely on local people offering their time to work with us on a range of activities and projects.  For example, there are wardens for the Tumulus Field in Littleton, litter-picking events take place to clean up our verges and pavements, we have a Parish Action on the Climate Emergency Group (PACE) which works to help people save energy, as well fostering a number of projects such as the mini-meadow in Harestock.  We’d love to hear from you if you’d like to join any of these or even if you’d be interested in being called upon to help occasionally when we need a bit of extra help.
